I coach a lot of leaders. Some have fared better than others this year. I’m not judging anyone. 2020 was/is a beast. Even so, some have handled this year better than others. As I sit here the day before Thanksgiving I’ve given some thought as to what made the difference between the leaders who held their own and thrived and those who lost some ground.

It was a tech startup coming out of Northwestern University. I met the founder through a mutual acquaintance. We were both young and ambitious—and rather full of ourselves.

Then, with all the glee of a child who was just given a crisply wrapped package on Christmas morning, he ripped open the cards, pulled one out and pulled it closer to his face. Unfounded panic and foolish ideas grow in the dark. Stay close to credible sources. There are experts. Depend on them. Take guidelines seriously and keep in step with them.
Taking New Ground
So there I was. This city kid living on 10 acres and surrounded by farm fields. No dumpsters to dive, no old buildings to break into, no base kids to get in trouble with. It was just my brothers and me in the middle-of-nowhere and the opportunity to Take New Ground.
