Training vs. Development - What’s the difference?

Both Training and Development are essential components of career growth. At Rootstock, we provide both.

The difference between the two: Training is about acquiring skills. Development is about transforming into an authentic and capable leader.

How do we deliver this authentic and capable transformation?

Here are our five irreducible elements of transformative, authentic leader development.

  1. Development must be discovery-based.

We need to create a space to discover what is most important to us, a place to have "Aha!" moments. While it seems we should inherently know what’s important to us, life often dictates our moments, and we easily drift into “tyranny of the urgent” mode.

2. Development must have a peer group.

Walking through a discovery process with others who are at similar stages in their career development fosters relatability, openness (vulnerability), and eventually, excitement and synergy.

3. Development must include “Timeless Edge” content.

The content needs to be both timeless, and cutting edge. All Rootstock Platform content is cutting edge in method and research, grounded in timeless wisdom.

4. Development must draw out lived experiences and current real-life situations.

Unpacking concepts within a peer group will bring diverse and personal perspectives. Everything will relate back to your everyday work world, allowing you to apply concepts immediately.

5. Development must include professional guidance.

Our Rootstock certified coaches walk with you in the process and ask questions that prompt your own insights, providing accountability and life-changing action steps.

Those are the five irreducible elements of DEVELOPMENT, in our humble (but confident) opinion.

Yours in authentic leadership development.
